How can we know whether the chemical reaction is exothermic or endo. ?? Is it just REMEMBER only???

Most of the chemical reactions are exothermic...
In the syllabus, only a few reaction mentioned is endothermic...for example...the reaction of hydrogencarbonate and acid...

*Please pay attention that heat is released during the reaction in the exothermic case but heat (energy is absorbed) may be needed to start up the reaction either in exothermic or endothermic case. This required energy is called activation energy.
