there is a question about condenstaion polymerization:
HOCH2CH2OH react with HOOCC6H4COOH ,
and the suggested answer is that, the repeating unit is (OCH2CH2OCOC6H4CO)
it means that HOCH2CH2OH has given H and HOOCC6H4COOH has given OH for the elimination of H2O.
then i want to ask why not the HOCH2CH2OH gives up OH and HOOCC6H4COOH gives up for the elimination of H2O?

To answer your question, a detailed analysis of the reaction (a reaction mechanism) needs to be considered and it is beyond the scope of the present syllabus. However, it should be noted that
1. HOOCC4H4COOH does not act as an acid to give H+ in the reaction.
2. HOCH2CH2OH is not an alkali since it cannot dissociate to give OH- ions.
3. The reaction concerned is thus not an acid-alkali neutralization.
